Maybe You Should Do It Yourself

You know that thing our husbands do where they do something so bad that you would be an idiot if you ever asked them to do it again? Well, my 13 year old girl is apparently trying that strategy on for size…

005

Because this is her idea of how to put dishes away and….

Yester day:

“This bathroom is STILL not clean”

“I have told you I cleaned it three times and you keep saying it is not good enough. Maybe if you want it done right you should do it yourself.”

“Maybe if you wanted to do anything other than clean the bathroom today, you would have done it right the first time.”

I tried saying the latter part of the above on my parents. Their response?

"No. I told you to do it so *you* could do it. You can do it properly. I shouldn't have to show you how to do it properly."

That exchange did not end well. ;)

Exactly, I told her that cleaning her bathroom was now her responsibility and she had a choice…she could just do it right the first time or she could spend her whole day doing it over and over again. But either way, she would not be doing anything else until it was done to an acceptable standard.
I remember doing the same thing at her age…but I was in a group home and my staff had check lists with every detail of how your chore was expected to be done that we had to use as a guideline and they checked us off against….hey, now that is a good idea!!!!!
funny!
oh dear.....what is her personality like? that may also have something to do with it.....or not, that's the secret!

Either way, it is one of those things we will all battle at one point or another :-(

I will say this, good for you for giving her things to do. My mother thought I was the next Itzhak Pearlman (Violin) and thought that if she didn't have me do chores and instead practice between 2-4 hours a day on the Violin it would pay off.

Result: a) I'm a speech therapist and not a concert Violinist and b) I never learned to multitask or do housework quickly which really is a detriment especially on a mother...(e.g. in other words I'm learning to be better and more efficient NOW instead of learning it as a 13 y/o) so know that you are doing your kid a favor even though I know you're going through the eye-rolling, pouty stage.

She has studied at the feet of a master; I have heard those very words out of the mouth of her father. At least there is hope that SHE will out grow it.

I did the same thing as your mother with her…because she was in the gym 20 hours a week up until this year and got great grades I figured she had enough on her plate. So the whole having to have household responsibilities is still new to her. Knowing that she is starting high school this year and that she would be graduating in four short years, I figured it was time she starts learning how to take care of herself.
Is the bathroom clean yet?
Couldn't agree more.Got to at least teach them right then if they want to live in a pigstye when they leave home it's their choice.
ha ha :)
that's how i actually do my pots and pans cupboard and my husband is the one who gets annoyed. to me it's like a bed -- why make it when you will unmake it again the same day? surely there are more exciting things to do ;)
that said, there are some chores i have to recheck and reassign non-stop ;) (the yard, bathrooms, etc)
Our girls have new rooms and are actually using them and I am so tired of explaining what no trash or toys on the floor means. "I'm done!" Oh really, is that why there is paper and cracker wrappers underneath your desk and over here in the corner? How hard is no trash on the floor!?
I do not let husband shop...he takes the first item he sees, does not compare price between sizes, does not compare price with alternative labels - simply takes the first item he sees. It does not work even if I give him detailed items by size, brand, quantiy and include the sale price/conditions - he will come home with the first version of the item he saw...sigh...it is the same with chores - as fast as he can do it regardless of whether it is even close to done right...sigh...same with fixing anything or READING INSTRUCTIONS FIRST...

At 13 years old I think you stand a chance. I always had to do something at the expectation level of the person in charge and it was so much easier to do it fhe first time up to standards so I could escape to spend time with friends. Got to love the teenage years...
